The monsoon season in Mumbai started with a relatively dry spell in June, falling short of at least 120 mm of rain from the usual average that month. However, Mumbai rains caught up in the month of July to recover the same. According to the observatories of Colaba and Santacruz, Mumbai and its suburbs recorded 1,474 mm of total rainfall in July. As per the observatories, this July has been the wettest, breaking the all-time high monthly rain record.

This record has been followed by with 1,468.5 mm rain which was reported in 2014 throughout the month of July. Last year, the city had recorded 1,464.8 mm rain in July, falling a bit short of the 2014 record. On July 26, 2005, when the deadly floods hit the city, about 944.2 mm of rainfall was recorded in just 24 hours. However, the total rainfall for the month that year was only 1,454.5 mm.
