Seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai have 78 percent water storage. However, Mumbaikars are still waiting for the order to withdraw the 10 percent water cut that was imposed a month ago.

On August 3, the reservoirs had 11,28,345 million liters of water. This reserve is sufficient to quench thirst for the next 293 days till May 21, 2024. People's representatives are demanding withdrawal of the water cut decision, but the BMC administration is not ready to withdraw the water cut.

This year monsoon arrived late

This year monsoon arrived late. On June 28, the water storage was only 1.5 lakh million liters which was only 7.26% of the total capacity. This water was sufficient for the next 27 days. Therefore, the BMC administration decided to reduce water supply by 10 percent in the city.

However, in the month of July, the rainfall started to increase in the catchment area. Vihar, Tansa, Tulsi and Modaksagar are overflowing and the remaining three lakes have more than 50 percent water storage.

Intensity of rain will be less in August

The weather department has already warned that the rainfall will be less in the month of August. Therefore, the municipality is in the wait and watch phase.

According to a civic official, all ponds must have 100% water storage by October 1. He said that only then the municipality can supply water till July 2024.
