Ganesh Chaturthi 2020: Will the celebrations be subdued this year?

For nearly two months now, Maharashtra has been under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. It has been over 40 days since the lockdown started and 14 districts in Maharashtra still continue to be in the red zone. This is slowly becoming the new normal and even when the restrictions are lifted, there could be some changes and adjustments that we might have to make till the time a cure or a vaccine is found for coronavirus.

One such change might be how people celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi. Every year Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with a lot of fervour all across the country and especially so in Maharashtra. However, keeping in mind the social distancing norms that one has to follow, this year the celebrations may end up being subdued.

While most feel that things will not become normal till Ganesh Chaturthi, the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanway Samiti is confident that the festival will be celebrated this year as well at any cost.

The President of the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanway Samiti, Naresh Dahibavkar has appealed to the people as well as the mandals to be prepared to celebrate the festival this year without much pomp and with simplicity. He said that several years ago, a plague has gripped the city, and even then, the people had brought the idols of Ganpati Bappa to their homes and had celebrated the 11-day festival with simplicity.

Ganesh Chaturthi in Mumbai is a one-of-a-kind experience. People from all over the world come to see the grandeur around the celebrations during this period. However, the COVID-19 pandemic might play the villain this year and people might not be able to witness the pomposity this year.

While Dahibavkar has asked the people to be mentally prepared to celebrate the festival without any grandeur, many Ganpati mandals have taken a 'Wait & Watch' stance. With a lockdown in place, most idol-makers have been unable to create the idols for the festival.
