When was the last time you chose to commute in Mumbai's popular Kaali Peeli? These Taxis in Mumbai have been famous all across the globe, and have been hailed as a symbol of the city. But the number of taxis are gradually reducing day by day, due to several reasons, primarily service and market competitors.

Earlier the government froze permits for new taxis and later the entry of private cab companies in the market, raised questions on the survival of Kaali Peeli taxis.

As per reports, these taxis, which were once the symbol of transportation in the city, have now been reduced down to 22 per cent. Today, for every Kaali Peeli taxi, there are three cab aggregators on the roads. Back in 1997, there were around 63,000 Kaali Peeli taxis, in comparison to 19,000 now. After 1997, the government froze the new permits for the taxis resulting in the drastic decrease.

Due to the crisis faced by the taxis, these taxi drivers are forced to register themselves with cab outsourcing companies like Ola, Uber, and others in order to sustain. Over the years, Kaali Peeli has tried to keep up with the need of the hour but the cab aggregators always have had the upper hand.
