The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a new food-truck policy aimed at providing job opportunities to underprivileged groups and promoting healthy eating habits.

Under the policy, 50 24×7 food trucks will be placed in busy areas around the city. The policy was first approved by the municipal commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal, in 2021 but faced delays due to various reasons. The final policy has now been approved, and tenders will be distributed for 50 identified locations in 24 municipal districts across the city.

The food trucks will be placed in the busiest areas of the city, with 50% of the workforce reserved for vulnerable groups, such as the economically disadvantaged, specially-abled individuals, and women-run NGOs and self-help groups. Operators for the food trucks will be chosen through a tendering process, and the trucks will not offer any raw produce. Additionally, the trucks will be located in areas without any other eating establishments within a 200-metre radius, as determined by a footfall survey.

Seven trucks will be placed in each of mumbai's seven municipal zones, while Zone 2, which includes central Mumbai neighbourhoods like Dadar, Worli, and Prabhadevi, will have eight trucks. The trucks will have to get (No Objection Certificate) NOCs from BMC's traffic department, fire department, and health department. A monitoring group will also be established to ensure accountability of the operations.
