At Mumbai's Zynova Shalby Hospitals, in Ghatkopar, doctors performed a total facial correction surgery on a 32 -year-old man, who had suffered facial deformity since childhood.

Dr. Kaustubh Sarvade, Otorhinolaryngologist and Dr. Samrat Tawde, UK trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon performed this surgery.

Kumar (name changed) had severe facial pain and facial disfigurement, after examination it was found that the pain and facial asymmetry was due to excessive growth of the jaw joint and bone growth around the ear canals. His chin was skewed to one side and his upper jaw was not in a level, with one side being shorter.

Doctors undertook planning on virtual software and his face was replicated by 3D modelling to create a plastic model. The surgery which was to be performed was done on the model to see the final results. A multitude of procedures was planned including the removal of abnormal jaw joints, resection of the left angle of the jaw, reduction of the ear bone overgrowths and reshaping the ear canal for an adequate size.

The successful marathon surgery went on for 11 hours and the patient will require a series of treatments and surgeries to prevent the regrowth of bones and reduce his facial deformities and asymmetries.

Dr. Samrat Tawde Maxillofacial Surgeon from Zynova Shalby Hospital, Ghatkopar said, “We did several tests and scans to ascertain the reason. We stimulated a 3-D model using patients scan data which gave us a real-time model of the patient’s facial skeleton. This Stereolithographic model gave us the exact measurements and we could compare the two sides of the face and calculate the asymmetric difference between the two sides. We could know exactly how much bone we need to cut to achieve fair symmetry”.

Dr. Kaustubh Sarvade, Otorhinolaryngologist added, “The planning for the surgery went on for 2 to 3 as the patient had previous surgeries for local bone growth but had never experienced such type of extensive planning and execution. The jaw joint on the affected side was 4 times the normal size. The hallmark of the surgery was the immaculate planning, use of stereolithographic models and superior control over the outcomes of the surgery.”

Kumar said, post-surgery “I am happy because I can go out and meet people with confidence. My life has changed. Since my teenage years, I suffered a lot due to my condition, as many people made fun of my face. But now, I am confident to face the public and would like to thank the team of doctors”.
