COVID-19: Mumbai witnesses 2,538 fresh cases, 132 deaths reported in Maharashtra

Maharashtra’s recovery rate came under 90 per cent for the first time since October on Tuesday. The national recovery rate, which was about 98 per cent in February, is now under 96 per cent.

On Tuesday, March 23, Maharashtra reported 28,699 new COVID-19 cases and 132 deaths, the state health department said. The daily death count was the highest since November 20 last year when 155 deaths had been reported.

With this, the state’s total caseload rose to 25,33,026 and death toll reached 53,589. Whereas, with the discharge of 13,165 patients, the total of recoveries increased to 22,47,495. At present, there are 2,30,641 active cases in Maharashtra.

Moreover, the state so far has tested 1,85,84,463 samples for coronavirus after 1,22,433 tests done on Tuesday.

There are 11,77,265 people are in-home quarantine while 11,887 are in institutional quarantine.

The number of new cases in the Vidarbha region is constantly around the 6,000-mark for the last seven days. On Tuesday, 4,636 patients recovered, which is a record to date. The number of recovered patients is rising constantly since March 20. On the same day, the region reported 6,244 new cases which took the total caseload of Vidarbha to above 4.25 lakh.

Of which, Nagpur witnessed 3,095 cases in a day touching the total tally to 1,99,771. While the death toll increased by 33 and the recovery count by 2,136. The district has 31,993 active cases and 4,697 deaths so far along with 1,63,081 people getting discharged.

Besides, the daily coronavirus cases hit a fresh peak in Pune on Tuesday, with 5,722 people testing positive in the last 24 hours despite the total number of tests dropping below 20,000 to 19,796 for the first time in the last six days.

Meanwhile, Mumbai city reported 3,514 new cases and eight deaths on Tuesday, taking its cumulative caseload to 3,69,451 and death toll to 11,604. The Mumbai division which includes surrounding regions too reported 6,870 new cases. Out of 132 deaths, 74 occurred in the last 48 hours and 23 in the last week. Rest 35 deaths are from the period before the last week.

Out of the total cases, 2,538 fresh infections were reported in the Thane district of Maharashtra on Tuesday. As a result, the total mounted to 2,93,154 while the toll rose to 6,403 with the death of 11 patients, an official said on Wednesday, March 24. The recovery rate in the district stood at 91.73 per cent with 2,68,918 patients recovering from disease so far. The district is now left with 17,833 active cases.
