Maharashtra records over 15,000 new COVID-19 cases; highest daily spike this year

On Friday, March 12, Maharashtra recorded 15,817 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 22,82,191. Currently, there are 1,10,485 active cases in the state. With 11,344 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 21,17,744.

More than 56 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 52,723. While 5,42,693 persons are under home quarantine, 4,884 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 92.79 per cent, and 2.31 per cent respectively.

Mumbai reported 1,646 new COVID-19 cases, 1,122 recoveries and four deaths on Friday, March 12, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,40,277. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 12,487 active cases and 3,15,379 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,519 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 35,16,875 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 30 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 214 buildings are sealed by the BMC.

Meanwhile, India reported 24,882 new cases, 19,957 recoveries and 140 deaths taking the tally up to 1,13,33,728 on Friday, March 12. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 1,09,73,260 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,58,446 in the country. At present, there are 2,02,022 active cases. So far, 2,82,18,457 healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated in the country.
