On Tuesday, March 16, Maharashtra recorded 17,864 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 23,47,328. Currently, there are 1,38,813 active cases in the state. With 9,510 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 21,54,253.

More than 87 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 52,996. While 6,52,531 persons are under home quarantine, 6,067 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 91.77 per cent, and 2.26 per cent respectively.

Mumbai reported 1,922 new COVID-19 cases, 1,236 recoveries and four deaths on Tuesday, March 16, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,47,581. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 15,263 active cases and 3,19,878 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,539 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 92 per cent. At present 35,93,065 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 34 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 246 buildings are sealed by the BMC.

Meanwhile, India reported 28,903 new cases, 17,741 recoveries and 188 deaths taking the tally up to 1,14,38,734 on Tuesday, March 16. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 1,10,45,284 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,59,044 in the country. At present, there are 2,24,406 active cases. So far, 3,50,64,536 healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated in the country.
