Maharashtra: 186 students, 4 teachers tested COVID-19 positive in Washim district

The state government and Mumbai police have warned of strict measures if people do not follow virus protocol. Moreover, CM Thackeray had also said that a decision on another lockdown would be taken on the basis of public behaviour in the next few days.

As Maharashtra battles a surge in coronavirus cases, a total of 190 positive cases have emerged from a school hostel in the Washim district of the state on Thursday, February 25. The lot comprises of 186 students and four teachers. The school premises have been declared a containment zone.

It comes across that the students are mostly from Amravati and Yavatmal. These two districts have contributed to a spike in virus cases in recent weeks.

On Wednesday, February 24, the state saw the biggest spike in the last four months with 8,800 new cases in a single day, while Mumbai recorded over 1,000 cases after a long time.

Apart from the hostel in the Washim district, a student hostel in the Latur district also has recorded as many as 39 students and five staff members positive for COVID-19. Of the students who have tested positive, most are from classes 9 and 10. Around 360 students staying at the hostel underwent the COVID19 test.

Meanwhile, the Latur district administration has announced a “Janata Curfew” on February 27 and 28.
