In a major development, two more cases of Omicron, new coronavirus variant, have been detected in Maharashtra on Monday, December 13.

The health department said that the total number of such cases in the state state has risen to 20. With this, Maharashtra becomes the highest among all states in the country with the cases of new strain.

One case was detected in Latur and the other in Pune, said the health department. In Pune, it is a 39-year old woman and in Latur, it is a 33-year-old male.

Moreover, the department said both the patients are asymptomatic and were fully vaccinated.

Both patients have a travel history to Dubai and three of their close contacts have been traced. All three of them tested negative for COVID-19, officials added.

Meanwhile, on the same day, it also came to light that a 40-year-old Dharavi resident, who was found Omicron positive after returning from Tanzania on December 10 was tested negative.

Besides, the tally across the nation has reached to 40.

Omicron patients have been found in five states and two Union territories (Delhi and Chandigarh) apart from Maharashtra. Rajasthan (9), Karnataka (3), Gujarat (4), Kerala (1) and Andhra Pradesh (1) and Union Territories of Delhi (2) and Chandigarh (1).

Maharashtra on Monday saw a drop in its daily COVID-19 infections and related deaths, with 569 people testing positive for the virus and five more succumbing due to it. A day earlier, on Sunday, 704 tested positive and 16 died due to coronavirus.
