With the increase in the number of coronavirus cases, the civic body of Navi Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to ramp up the facilities in the hospitals across the area.

According to sources, at present, NMMC has provided 200 ICU beds and 80 ventilators in DY Patil Hospital. In the first phase, out of 100 ICU beds and 40 ventilators planned at MGM Hospital, Kamothe, 20 ICU beds and 10 ventilators have been commissioned from today. The remaining ICU beds and ventilators are to be made available in phases over the next 10 days.

Moreover, every day from 7 pm onwards, Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar regularly conducts 3-4 hours of web conversations with Nodal Officers of Municipal Corporations in all private hospitals as well as Medical Officers of all Civil Health centres and Assistant Commissioners of all departments and officials of Health and other departments.

The Navi Mumbai area which consists of eight wards and has a population of 1.2 million, has been seeing close to 1,000 cases daily, on average since the beginning of April 2021. Those with mild symptoms must quarantine at home, and a doctor assigned by the COVID-19 war room is to check on them. If a person needs to be admitted to a hospital, the area’s medical officer should be contacted, and they would arrange for a bed at the nearest COVID-19 Care Centre. This system was put in place following the pandemic, which raged through the state last year.

Even though the corporation’s capacity has increased in the last year, in an unfortunate scenario, people are reportedly still dealing with the repercussions of not finding a bed on time.
