21 people died due to mucormycosis so far in Navi Mumbai

According to doctors, mucormycosis is a post-COVID complication where patients who have recovered from coronavirus suffer from a fungal infection. Most of the early symptoms of this disease include headache, facial swelling, swelling around the eye etc.

According to reports, mucormycosis has claimed 21 lives so far in Navi Mumbai. Moreover, 86 patients with mucormycosis, also commonly known as Black Fungus, have been found in the municipal area.

Of these, 49 patients have recovered. Nine patients with fungal infections are currently undergoing treatment in the city.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has set up a facility of free examination, tests and treatment for mucormycosis patients. Outpatient Facility (OPD) rooms have been set up at three NMMC Public Hospitals at Vashi, Nerul and Airoli to check these patients.

In addition, a treatment facility for such patients has been arranged at Vashi Public Hospital and other hospitals in the municipal corporation area – Nerul and Airoli. If a patient needs surgery, a panel of reputed surgeons has been formed in the city and their services will be made available as and when required.

The state government has included treatment for fungal infection in the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Yojana. Under this scheme, four hospitals in the NMMC area have been included -- Navi Mumbai Municipal Public Hospital Sector 10 Vashi, Dr D. Y. Patil Hospital Sector 5 Nerul, Indravati Hospital Sector 3 Airoli, Terna Hospital Sector 22 Nerul.
