A day after Maharashtra accepted that the state had been hit by a second wave of Coronavirus infection, it reported  23,179 new Covid-19 cases. This is a record high as far as 2021 is concerned and also accounted for over 60 per cent of new cases diagnosed in India.

The number of cases reported by Maharashtra on Wednesday is close to the peak of 24,886 that the state recorded in September last year.  It is also almost 30 per cent higher than the numbers posted by the state just a day before.

Nagpur city reported the maximum cases on Wednesday with 2,698 fresh cases. It was followed by Pune city, which clocked 2,612 fresh cases. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (excluding Mumbai) reported 2,434 fresh cases, including Kalyan-Dombivli with 637 fresh cases and Thane city with 516 new cases. Districts, including Nashik, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Buldhana, Yavatamal, Nanded, Beed, and Nandurbar, reported the chunk of the fresh cases on Wednesday.

What is worrisome is that the next highest caseload reported by a state on Wednesday was Punjab with 2,039. However, cities in Maharashtra such as Nagpur, Pune and MMR posted more cases than Punjab.

In a virtual meeting with the state chief Ministers, PM Modi urged on the need to take quick decisive steps. He said, "We need to soon stop the emerging second peak of corona". He also stressed upon ramping up testing and strictly monitor mask-wearing.

Even as the coronavirus cases are on the rise, the lockdown has been ruled out in Mumbai as of now. Mumbai Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh earlier in the day shared that the situation in Mumbai was still under control. He also stated that a lockdown can be avoided by imposing stricter restrictions for now.

Currently, there are 1,52,760 active cases in the state at present. With the addition of Wednesday, Maharashtra's overall infection count rose to 23,70,507.
