Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the city of Mumbai have reduced in the last few months, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been working relentlessly to vaccinate citizens in Mumbai. Vaccination centres, drives and several initiatives have been planned so far, to ensure citizens get vaccinated at ease, without facing obstacles.

Data released by the BMC reveals that the civic body administered more than 25 lakh vaccine doses in September, and this has been highest since March 2021, when the vaccination began in the city. As of September 28, 2021, the BMC had administered 2,530,145 doses of COVID vaccine off which, over 1 million were at private hospitals, more than 410,000 at centres run by BMC and others are government hospitals.

Sharing more details, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani, in a conversation with the Hindustan Times, said, “We are expecting the supply will cross the 1.5-million mark in September. The vaccination is going at a good pace. Going by the current pace, we will vaccinate our entire target population by the end of October and all will be fully vaccinated by February 2022.”

Earlier this week, the civic body informed that the health department is working towards achieving the target of vaccinating more than nine million eligible adults by February 2022. However, the COVID task force in the state has mentioned that the citizens will have to continue wearing masks until the end of 2022, as the booster doses of vaccines are expected to be administered next year. Meanwhile, vaccines for children would also be permitted and the drive for the same would begin soon.

The BMC runs a total of 305 vaccination centres in Mumbai. Besides this, 139 centres are at private hospitals and 20 are run by the state. Considering the need for vaccines, the BMC and state government are focused towards purchasing more vaccines to expedite the drive. The shortage of vaccines was not observed in September, however, citizens faced several concerns in July and August 2021.
