Over the last few weeks, the number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases across the city have reduced significantly and similar pattern has been observed in the city of Mumbai which was one of the most affected cities in India during both the first and second COVID wave.

However, the efforts taken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the last several months have been successful, as the city has witnessed a significant drop in COVID cases over many weeks now. Moreover, the model implemented by the BMC was also appreciated globally considering the population of the city and steps taken to curb the spread across several localities.

Data released by the civic body shows that the city currently has approximately 2255 active patients, of which only 500 patients are undergoing treatment at various COVID centres and hospitals in Mumbai. As a result of this, a total of 29,500 beds are vacant across COVID centres in BMC areas. Officials have stated that more than half the number of active patients have mild symptoms of the COVID and have isolated themselves at home.

Post the effect of the second wave, the civic body imposed strict safety guidelines basis which the rate of corona-free patients in Mumbai has reached 97 per cent. Moreover, the rate of newly diagnosed COVID patients stands at 0.04 per cent.

Efforts are being made to ensure necessary healthcare facilities are made available incase of the third COVID wave. To tackle the crisis effectively, the administration has set up paediatric wards in Mumbai and jumbo COVID centers at Dahisar, Malad, Goregaon Nesco, BKC Kurla, NSCI Worli and Mulund. Additional centres have also been proposed at Mahalakshmi Racecourse, Kanjurmarg, and Somaiya ground.
