Maharashtra: Union Home Secretary Recommends Night Curfew in Regions With High COVID Positivity Rates

Given the mounting COVID-19 cases across Kerala and Maharashtra, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla reviewed the containment measures taken by both states in a video conference on Thursday. 

A statement by the Ministry of Home Affairs said, “The Union Home Secretary reviewed the efforts being made by the state governments to contain the spread of infections and observed that more efforts would be required to arrest the increase in infections.”

Bhalla recommended bringing back night curfews in regions where positivity rates are high. Additionally, Kerala and Maharashtra were recommended to carry out vaccination efforts in the same capacity and assured that enough vaccines will be provided if required. Bhalla stressed that the vaccines supplied to the states have to be administered. In other words, urging states to avoid vaccine wastage.

The following of COVID appropriate behaviour is recommended while states have been directed to discourage mass gatherings, particularly during the upcoming festive season. The two states have also been asked to ramp up COVID testing in regions with high positivity rates.

The virtual meeting was attended by NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr VK Paul, accompanied by the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Director of the National Centre for Communicable Disease (NCDC), and the Directors General of Police of Kerala and Maharashtra.
