Since the beginning of the coronavirus last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a fine of INR 200 on the citizens found without masks in public places.

However, enforcing the mask mandate has been one of the biggest challenges before the authorities. Moreover, as the curbs are eased, ensuring social distancing will be key to keep the crowded metropolitan away from the grip of the third wave.

Now, with the opening up of the city, many citizens are seen dropping their guard and being mask-less in marketplaces.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that instead of action against the mask-less increasing, there has been a drop in average daily cases across the civic wards in the city.

On the other hand, the civic officials have said that marshals will start frequenting marketplaces as festivals are just around the corner.

According to reports, the number of average daily cases against the mask-less has gone down from 233 per ward in June to 222 per ward in August, suggesting leniency in enforcing the mask-wearing.

As per the data revealed by the BMC, it has been observed that so far earned INR 54.98 crores have been collected as fines through 27.31 lakh cases.

Reportedly, the K west ward alone has recovered over INR 4.63 crores from over 2.29 lakh cases.

In addition, the civic body also collects a fine from people caught spitting at public places. As on August 7, the BMC has fined nearly 19,000 people in nine months and collected a fine of 39 lakhs.
