On Tuesday, December 22, a total 590 passengers landed in Mumbai from the UK in three aircrafts, a civic official said. He added that there was no COVID-19 symptomatic person was on board these flights.

A BMC official said 187 passengers were from Mumbai, 167 from rest of Maharashtra and 236 were from other states. While 299 passengers were sent to various hotels, where they will be kept under institutional quarantine, the passengers from other states will be sent to their respective states, he said.

Travellers from outside Maharashtra having connecting flights to their native places were allowed to do so. Those wishing to travel by road were also allowed to go to their respective destinations and this information was sent to their state representatives, said officials.

In order to prevent spread of the new mutant, BMC issued guidelines for all passengers arriving from Europe and Middle East nations stating that they will undergo mandatory institutional quarantine at their own cost, in the nearby hotel for seven days.

However, the symptomatic or asymptomatic positive passengers will be shifted to Seven Hills Hospital. Passenger will pay for the RT-PCR test to be conducted between the fifth and seventh day.

Later, if tested negative, passenger would be discharged with seven days mandatory home quarantine. If tested positive, patients will be quarantined at the hotel or COVID-19 hospital for 14 days.

BMC officials shifted the passengers, who landed from UK, directly to hotels by BEST buses.

The Central government on Monday, December 21 said all UK-India flights will be suspended from December 23 to December 31 in view of the emergence of a new coronavirus strain in that country. It also said all passengers coming from UK on Monday and Tuesday, December 22 would be compulsorily tested for coronavirus on arrival at airports.

Details of three flights and passengers that arrived on December 22

    1. AI-130 flight carried 250 passengers to Mumbai. Out of which, 63 are from Mumbai, 75 from Maharashtra and 112 from other states.

    2. 115 passengers arrived in Mumbai on VS-354. Of these, 52 are from Mumbai, 30 from Maharashtra and 33 from outside Maharashtra.

    3. BA-139 carried 225 passengers to Mumbai. Of these, 72 are from Mumbai, 62 from Maharashtra and 91 from other states.
