On Friday, April 25, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had issued a warning to nursing homes and private clinics saying, "Remain open or face action". After which, 75 per cent of nursing homes resumed operations. Out of the 1,416 private nursing homes in the city, 1,068 have reopened. Alongside, 89 out of the 99 dialysis centres in Mumbai have also started functioning.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, private hospitals and nursing homes across the city had shut down. Owing to which, non-COVID patients were in a fix as they had nowhere to go for treatment. After receiving repeated complaints, the civic body ordered all the private clinics and nursing homes to resume operations.

"It's been observed that even after proper guidelines, some private hospitals remain shut, leading to problems for non-COVID-19 patients. Action will be taken against such establishments under the Epidemic [Diseases] Act, 1897," read the release by BMC.

While 75 per cent of the clinics have complied with BMC's orders, the remaining 25 per cent are still to respond to the same. As per the officials at BMC, they are not in the favour of taking a harsh against defaulters. However, they also don't want the patients to not get the treatment they deserve. Given that some of the nursing homes and private clinics have not resumed operations despite repeated requests, BMC has now started suspending licences of non-compliant nursing homes.

BMC Commissioner Praveen Pradeshi has already issued an order to the Health Department asking the concerned officials to take necessary action against the defaulters. As per the order, Commissioner Pardeshi has asked the health department officials to serve notice to these nursing homes first and later take action against them.
