Just when the Mira-Bhayander had been witnessing a steady drop in the number of COVID-19 cases, nine fresh cases were reported from the area on Tuesday while two persons succumbed to the disease. With this, this the total number of fatalities in the satellite township has gone up to five while the number of positive cases has risen to 190.

As per the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Commissioner Chandrakant Dange, the two fatalities consisted of a male and a female, both aged above 60. The male patient was undergoing treatment for coronavirus at a private hospital whereas the female patient was admitted in a government hospital.

Among the nine new cases, five were male, including a 6-year-old boy, and four were female. All the nine cases are reportedly said to have a work history, mostly in the health sector, in Mumbai and their close contacts. As per MBMC, of the 190 positive cases, 96 were having work history in Mumbai.

On the bright side, 114 positive cases out of 190 had recovered in MBMC, with a record 56 being discharged from hospital last Saturday.

Meanwhile, after introducing a shutdown in three phases, the civic body eased the total shutdown conditions by allowing the opening of grocery and essential shops between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. However, the fruit, vegetable, mutton, chicken, and fish shops and markets continue to remain shut till May 8.

Alongside, the MBMC has also decided to allow photocopy centers and stationery shops in the twin-city to operate between 9 am to 9 pm till May 8. The decision comes in view of the inconvenience faced by migrant workers and other stranded people who have to file online/offline applications supported by documents including medical certificates to obtain travel permissions for their homebound journey.
