There's something to cheer about as a 90-year-old woman was discharged from the civil hospital in Thane on Tuesday after recovering from COVID-19. On Tuesday, there were 121 new COVID-19 cases reported in Thane, taking the tally for the area to 1,399.

These include 452 cases from Thane municipal limits, 395 from Navi Mumbai, 224 from Kalyan-Dombivali, 189 from Mira Bhayander, 50 from Thane rural, 42 from Badlapur, 20 from Bhiwandi-Nizampur, 16 from Ulhasnagar and 11 from Ambernath municipal limits. So far, Thane district has recorded 38 deaths due to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, a day after Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi issued a circular to seal Kalyan-Dombivli border, the decision has been stayed. As per the circular, Kaylan-Dombivli residents working in Mumbai would not have been allowed back to leave or enter Kalyan from May 8 in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

On the other hand, just when the Mira-Bhayander had been witnessing a steady drop in the number of COVID-19 cases, nine fresh cases were reported from the area on Tuesday while two persons succumbed to the disease. With this, the total number of fatalities in the satellite township as of Tuesday, May 5, went up to five while the number of positive cases had risen to 190.

In the Mira Bhayander township, MBMC had earlier only allowed milk and medicine shops to open. However, on Tuesday, the civic body also decided to allow photocopy centers and stationery shops in the twin-city to operate between 9 am to 9 pm till May 8. The decision comes in view of the inconvenience faced by migrant workers and other stranded people who have to file online/offline applications supported by documents including medical certificates to obtain travel permissions for their homebound journey.
