If you love ice related food items, then you will have to contemplate before eating, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) health department has found out that contaminated ice is doing the rounds in Mumbai.

The health department had collected samples from hotels, restaurants, juice centres and shops where ice golas are prepared and sent for an inspection. Post inspection, it was found that more than 90 per cent ice was contaminated which is sufficient to make one fall sick.

400 contaminated samples

According to the BMC health department, they collected 410 ice samples between March 1 and March 31 from juice centres, restaurants, hotels etc. Out of 410 samples, 400 turned out to be contaminated. According to the doctors, contaminated ice is the carrier of E-coli bacteria which is not good for human bodies.

E-coli can cause problems in lungs and intestines and some people can contract pneumonia as well,” Dr Avinash Supe, Dean, KEM Hospital.

Along with streetside vendors, contaminated ice was found in factories as well. The health department collected ice samples from 15 ice factories, out of which, many turned out to be contaminated. Following which, the BMC destroyed 14,700 kg ice.

We will keep on collecting ice samples as such contaminated ice is not good for one’s health,” Dr Padmaja Keskar, Executive Health Officer, BMC.
