Keeping the increasing number of coronavirus cases in mind, the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have started implementing various measures to ensure the safety of the citizens. With an aim to control the spread, passengers leaving Mumbai will now be able to test for COVID-19, if needed, before boarding the plane.

A new testing facility has been set up at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, and as of October 27, 2020, a total of 3,340 passengers have been tested, out of which 2,930 were male and 400 were female passengers. So far, 38 passengers have tested positive for coronavirus from the samples collected at the centre. The airport currently handles an average of 100 tests a day.

This facility was accessible only for arriving passengers. However, recently this has been extended to those who come also visit the airport to drop off passengers.

The central government had earlier taken steps to revive the international airport which was closed since March 25, 2002, due to the pandemic and the following lockdown. Officials had asked airport staff to test passengers for coronavirus at the airport, and acting upon the same, an RT-PCR testing facility was started at Mumbai Airport from September 6, 2020.

The service was used under the 'Vande Bharat' campaign by passengers returning from other countries who were then boarding for the final destination by domestic airlines. Later, this service was then made available to all passengers arriving at Mumbai Airport. Expanding this further, the service is now every passenger leaving Mumbai and one can make use of this testing facility to ensure safety.

In order to visit the lab, one will have to go to the fourth floor of Terminal 2. Departing passengers can register at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport website www.csmia.aero or at the help desk, and testing will be done after registration. Passengers will receive the test report in 8 hours but should arrive at the airport, 8 to 12 hours before the scheduled time. They will be exempted from institutional quarantine if the test report shows negative.
