Anil Deshmukh, the Home Minister of Maharashtra, took to Twitter to inform that 45 police personnel lost their lives due to coronavirus in the state of Maharashtra so far. Approximately 3,820 have tested positive for COVID-19 in the department.

In a series of tweets, Deshmukh further informed that there has been a steady rise in the number of calls on the police helpline. Over six lakh people have been quarantined in the state while the government is running 122 relief camps where 4,138 workers from different states have been provided refugee along with other essentials.

The policemen along with other frontline workers such as doctors, nurses, public transport employees have been the most vulnerable to the infection in the midst of the pandemic. The police personnel have been patrolling the streets of the state to ensure lockdown norms are not flouted which is one of the reasons why the number of cases among the policemen is high. Also, when the policemen take action against defaulters, they come in contact with these individuals, putting them at risk of contracting the virus.

In the recent past, as a part of the joint venture by CREDAI-MCHI, Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana (BJS) and Desh Apnayen under the guidance of the MCGM, a team of medical practitioners have successfully screened and treated more than 60 police stations. The team of doctors have tended more than 60 police stations which include Malad, Ghatkopar, Tilaknagar, Thane and Dombivli police stations. The effort has been commendable and a thorough check-up has been done of the police personnel. CREDAI-MICHI, BJS and Desh Apnayen with the support of local corporators, MLAs, MPs from the ward Worli, Matunga, Dadar, Andheri, Borivali, Kandivali, Bandra, Mulund, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Powai, Mira-Bhayandar, Kalyan-Dombivali, Ambernath have also initiated to screen and treat the police personnel through the Mobile Dispensary Service.
