Arthur Jail in Mumbai reports new coronavirus cases

The Arthur Jail in Mumbai has reported 81 new cases of the coronavirus after which the prison’s tally has reached 184. This tally includes 158 inmates and 26 prison officials. The COVID-19 crisis continues to dampen the situation in the prison accelerating the process to make a temporary quarantine facility inside he jails as a consequence of law and order along with logistical issues. In the past, infected inmates were shifted to a quarantine facility in Mahul, near Chembur. However, due to logistical inconveniences and law and order issues, inmates are now being kept in a quarantine ward at circle number three and circle number ten at Arthur road jail.

Doctors from JJ Hospital have been visiting the jail every day to monitor the infected inmates and their conditions. Earlier, the Byculla women jail in Mumbai reported its first case of coronavirus. A 54-year-old inmate has been tested positive for the novel virus. The inmate was taken to the JJ hospital after her oxygen saturation level had fallen below 90 per cent. Even though her first test came out negative, the second test that she took came out positive for COVID-19. The inmate is currently being treated at St. George Hospital.

The COVID-19 death toll has crossed the 500-mark in the city recently with 19 people succumbing to the infection on Sunday. As India enters another week of lockdown, PM Narendra Modi is slated to hold a video conference with the Chief Minister of the states with the focus being expected to be on the rescaling and reopening of the economy ensuring safety precautions are taken into considerations. The number of coronavirus cases crossed the 67,000-mark on Monday. There are 44,029 active cases at the moment with 20,916 patients having been cured or recovered while 2,206 people have died as a consequence of the deadly coronavirus. Maharashtra alone is currently dealing with 22,161 cases and has 13,739 cases in Mumbai itself. The rising numbers did not sit well with CM Uddhav Thackeray who warned the citizens on Friday to strictly follow the lockdown restrictions in order to safeguard themselves and their neighbours.
