The Arthur Road jail was ravaged with the coronavirus in May when 181 positive cases were reported from that one location. Inspector General (IG), Prisons, Deepak Pandey has been at the helm during the pandemic, and has overseen the quick recovery of all infected staff as well as the prisoners at Arthur Road jail. It’s also worth noting that Arthur Road jail only has one COVID-19 positive case as of now.

The necessary measures were taken by IG Pandey as well as the doctors from JJ Hospital. Pandey reportedly created a manual along with the doctors detailing a routine that was to be strictly followed from dawn to dusk.

Providing more details on the routine of the prisoners, it is said that they had to perform pranayam yoga sessions as soon as they woke up followed by spending two hours in sunlight. Additionally, the infected staff and prisoners were also given Sanshamani Vati tablets (Ayurvedic), and four tablets of arsenic album upon the recommendations of a homeopathic doctor.

The diet of the infected people was also taken care of which consisted of boiled vegetables for lunch coupled with beet and cucumber salad. Turmeric milk with powdered black pepper was also provided to the prisoners. Keeping their safety in mind, prisoners were given plastic plates as well as bowls that cannot be used by anyone else.

Additionally, the 28 staff members from Arthur Road jail who tested positive in May have completely recovered from the virus and have rejoined work, it is said.

The IG also provided directions on personal hygiene that needed to be followed. “There is a toilet in every barrack. We told every prisoner to sanitise his hands before going to the toilet, washing them with soap after using it, and to pour water onto the toilet latch. Toilets are being cleaned every day with pesticides,” he said.

Given that congestion was one of the biggest concerns for the authorities at Arthur Road, around 254 prisoners were released on bail as per a High Court order.

"At least 181 people were found positive for COVID-19 in Arthur Road Jail. Of these, most of the 153 prisoners did not have symptoms, but we put them in the isolation wards. If someone got worse, he was taken to the hospital for treatment,” the IG added.
