Maharashtra’s concerns with the coronavirus are increasing each day as Wednesday was the second straight day to have more than 30 COVID-19 related deaths in the state. Wednesday saw 32 patients succumbing to the virus, with the total state death tally standing at 432 as of April 29.

Additionally, 26 of the 32 deaths reported in the state on Wednesday came from Mumbai, making up for 80 per cent. With this, Mumbai has seen its highest single-day COVID-19 related deaths. Maharashtra has now seen a total of 9,915 positive cases and is expected to cross 10,000 cases over the next few days. A majority of these cases have come from Mumbai, with the city accounting for 6,644 of the positive cases as per data provided by the authorities.

Keeping the rising number of cases in mind, civic authorities have decided to strictly enforce containment measures in red zones of the city. Maharashtra recently announced an easing of restrictions for industries in green zones of the state, while the majority of the metropolitan city has remained shut given the heavy spike of cases over the past few days.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has specified that train services will not resume anytime soon. While essential services continue to operate under strict regulations, cases continue to rise from hotspots. Contact tracing has proven to be a particularly tough task given that several people engaged in public or civic work have also been impacted.

One of the casualties on Wednesday was a BMC Inspector from the Assessment Department, Madhukar Haryan. Previously, police officers on the frontlines have given up their lives after contracting coronavirus. This highlights the need for adequate protection to those at the forefront of this battle against COVID-19 before it’s too late.
