Minimal percent of COVID-19 reinfection cases in Mumbai, reveals BMC

The city has reported the most number of reinfection cases in the second wave because of the higher infection rate of Delta variants.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, 0.02% of recovered COVID-19 patients were reinfected in Mumbai. From the start of the pandemic till November 1, nearly 7.41 lakh COVID-19 patients were surveyed by the civic body. Out of which, 126 patients were found to be reinfected with coronavirus.

Additional Commissioner of BMC Suresh Kakani said that there is a rising concern among people of getting reinfected with variants of coronavirus. They are also getting requests from hospitals to permit booster shots for healthcare workers. However, data shows that reinfection cases are minimal.

The city has reported the most number of reinfection cases in the second wave. It was because of the higher infection rate of Delta variants. According to the data accessed by the Indian Express reveals that 82% of the reinfected patients didn't have any comorbidities.

Of the 24 administrative wards in Mumbai, only four of them - A (Fort), E (Byculla), Ward FS (Parel), and Ward PS (Goregaon West) recorded zero cases of reinfection. The K-West (Andheri West) ward reported the highest number of reinfection cases (40). 

Meanwhile, concerns over the Omicron variant of coronavirus is rising. The municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has directed the officials to ramp up daily testing to 50k samples.

While the Maharashtra government, on Saturday, issued revised COVID-19 guidelines to prevent the spread of infection.
