BMC decides to vaccinate hotel and restaurant workers in Mumbai

Currently, the Municipal Commissioner has directed the concerned officials to share the details about the total number of hotel and restaurant workers from all the 24 wards in Mumbai.

Vaccination is the currently the only way to stay safe from the coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and keeping this in mind, the state government and the civic bodies are working towards administering vaccines to  citizens in Maharashtra. So far, people above the age of 45 and many between the age of 18 and 44 have been vaccinated. On the other hand, there is a shortage of vaccines across India and the respective state governments are working towards procuring the same from the manufacturers. 

Understanding the importance, the state government is currently administering vaccines based on priority. Keeping the same in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken an important decision to vaccinate the workers of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai, whereby employees above 18 years of age  will be vaccinated.

The civic body has also started planning for the vaccination drive for this segment and the Municipal Commissioner has directed the concerned officials to inform the body about the total number of hotel and restaurant workers from all the 24 wards in Mumbai. The deadline for the same has been set for Monday, June 7, 2021. Once the data is received, next steps for vaccination will be planned

Meanwhile, the pandemic and the lockdown across Maharashtra has impacted the hotel and restaurant sector significantly, and with a hope to receive support,  the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) recently wrote to BMC commissioner Iqbal Chahal requesting grant concessions. The letter included a requested the administration to permit the operation of stand-alone restaurants and bars in the city and in the hotels. Further, the officials asked the body to allow the restaurants to be operational until 11 pm.

Members from the association revealed that over 20 lakh jobs have been affected during the pandemic since March 2020, and with every passing month, several businesses are shutting down due to the obstacles. So far, the industry has incurred loss of over INR 2000 crore, and might lose another INR 1000 crore in revenue if the lockdown continues for a few more weeks.
