As Maharashtra continues to be the state with the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases (45 positives and 1 death) so far, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking stringent steps to maintain the hygiene of the city. BMC authorities have started fining ₹1,000 to citizens who spit on Mumbai’s streets.

In a tweet posted late last night, the BMC mentioned that it has collected more than ₹1.5 lakh as of yesterday, speaking volumes about the number of people who fail to recognize government and local municipality advisories as well as general hygiene. With a total of ₹1,63,000 collected so far, the BMC says it has fined 163 people.

The authorities also give out warnings as per the data it has provided, although there’s no way to know who decides when to warn a citizen and when to fine them. The BMC has fined citizens in 18 wards that come under its periphery while data on the rest of the wards are currently awaited.

With the number of active COVID-19 cases currently at 45 in Maharashtra, the health professionals and local authorities are bracing for more active cases. Keeping this in mind, the state and central governments have a bigger responsibility to curb this.

The central government has already advised citizens against non-essential travel while also asking them to stay at home under quarantine for a period of 14 days if they’re returning from their international travels. The country has seen multiple cases wherein returning passengers either escaped quarantine or refused to get tested out of fear or stigma.
