A Cancer Care Centre is likely to be launched by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under the KEM hospital for the first time.

According to the reports, they will be appointing a consultant for Rs 2.8 crores. The consultant will also have the responsibility of finding a location for the centre and provide expertise on Proton Therapy.

Proton therapy is considered a very effective cancer treatment. The radiation targets only the cancer cells and does not kill any other cells in the body. The consultant will also look after the technical and equipment details for the proton therapy.

According to the proposal, there will be state-of-the-art treatment at the centre and will also include detection facilities for cancer. The facilities include proton therapy, chemotherapy, mammography, sonography, and brachytherapy. On Wednesday, October 20, a proposal will be tabled before the standing committee.

The patients having a poor financial background are currently receiving free treatments from 16 peripheral hospitals. However, several facilities are unavailable in municipal hospitals. They have to get treated in private hospitals for certain treatments that cost a huge amount of money.

Addressing the same, civic officials have said that the facilities provided in this centre would be affordable for the financially backward class. The administration will be relying on the consultant's report and decide whether there is a need to set up the Proton Therapy Centre.
