BMC officials said that a final call on whether New Year celebrations will be permitted in restaurants and hotels will be taken in December following a review. If the month of December notices a rise in COVID-19 infections, authorities said that they may impose some restrictions on the New Year festivities.

“If there is a second wave or surge in the cases in December, we might limit the New Year celebrations accordingly. If the cases are stable, celebrations might be allowed with certain restrictions,” a BMC official said.

Previously, officials were expecting to see a surge in COVID-19 cases after Diwali, while the civic body urged the citizens to continue taking precautionary measures to safeguard themselves against a second wave.

Currently, bars and restaurants in Mumbai can operate at 50 per cent capacity. Weddings and other events or gatherings also have a restriction in place with only 50 people allowed per event.

The hospitality industry has been one of the hardest-hit sectors during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This comes as the Maharashtra Government had approved a 24x7 nightlife plan for Mumbai around two months before the pandemic hit the country.
