According to sources, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to buy 75 lakh face masks for the school-going students in view of the pandemic.

Moreover, the civic body is touted to spend a whooping ₹20 crores on the same. Once school reopens in Mumbai, the school-going students would need to adhere to all the social distancing protocols and rules with regards to COVID-19 due to which the BMC has decided to provide the students with face masks.

Meanwhile, in the midst of the coronavirus, the usage of masks has been made mandatory across the country. Mumbai, similarly, had made the usage of masks a compulsion. However, several people have been observed in the city who have ventured out without the necessary protection. The BMC as a consequence had earlier decided to impose a penalty of ₹1,000 on those who step outside their houses without face masks on.

On the other hand, on January 4, the BMC declared 206 private schools across the city illegal. Moreover, the BMC has warned parents against enrolling their children in these schools. According to the civic body, these schools have not taken the necessary approvals from the authorities concerned. Of these, 162 are English medium schools, 16 Urdu schools, 15 Hindi and 13 Marathi-medium schools. Meanwhile, these schools reside in the eastern and northern suburbs of the city, while the maximum, 67, are in M East ward (Mankhurd and Govandi) in the city along with Malad, Malwani, Ghatkopar and Bhandup.
