Following criticism from the Centre, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has improved its contact tracing programme and quarantine drive in Dharavi. Owing to the density of population in Dharavi, the area has become one of the critical hotspots in Mumbai.

As part of the new strategy to curb the spread of coronavirus in the slums, by Saturday evening, the BMC had quarantined 6,533 high-risk contacts at its various institutional facilities, taking the ratio of persons in institutional quarantine to 1:5.45. This comes after, Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary (Health), Ministry of Health, had visited Dharavi and had expressure displeasure at the poor isolation ratio at Dharavi.

The team had asked the BMC to isolate at least 10 high-risk contacts for every positive patient. When Agarwal had visited Dharavi, the isolation ratio in the slums was 1:3.38.

“We have increased the positive cases-to-isolation ratio. By Saturday we had 1,198 cases and we identified 6,528 high-risk contacts and 29,006 low-risk contacts. We have already put 6,533 of them in institutional quarantine and 31,766 in home quarantine. These are the ones who have a toilet in their house. So far 345 people have been discharged," Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Corporation, G-North ward told Mirror.

With 85 new cases in the last 24 hours, the number of COVID-19 cases in Dharavi has crossed the 1,300-mark. Alongside, the slum area reported no new deaths throughout the day and the death tally stands at 56.

In other news, the BMC, on May 17, 2020, updated the list of containment zones in Mumbai. The new report reveals that there is a 75 per cent decrease in the number of zones, where, as of May 17, there are 674 containment zones or red zones in Mumbai, in comparison to 2,643 zones which were listed on May 12, 2020.
