The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to lay foundation stones for five projects, including the construction of new hospitals and health facilities and the redevelopment and upgradation of a few old ones.

According to the reports, around 12 per cent of the budget (INR 4,728.53 crores) is reserved for developmental projects. Last year, the budget for the same was INR 4,260 crores. Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said that the five projects include setting up one new hospital in Govandi. In contrast, the four existing hospitals in the suburbs will go through redevelopment.

The civic administration will be completing the makeover of Sion Hospital and are also planning to inaugurate the Cooper Hospital project in Vile Parle, upgraded to a super specialty hospital. In the Nair Hospital building, they will be inaugurating a wing dedicated to cancer treatment. The civic officials said they aim at making health care facilities available for citizens nearby, similar to three civic-run super specialty hospitals -- Nair in Mumbai Central, LTMG in Sion and KEM in Parel.

In the five projects, they would also be working on the redevelopment of Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali and increasing the bed capacity in the hospital. In November, they will work on redeveloping Siddhartha Municipal General Hospital in Goregaon. From November or December, they will set up a new super specialty hospital in Govandi east.

The civic officials are aiming at improving public health care infrastructure along with medical colleges.
