With an increasing number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai and Maharashtra, the state government along with the municipal corporations are making arrangements to ensure the safety of patients infected with the virus. The recently revised guidelines by the BMC states that COVID-19 patients in Mumbai may henceforth be moved from one hospital to another, for better treatment facility and care. This decision to move them from one COVID centre to another is a part of the discharge policy drafted to make sure that patients who are seriously-ill COVID patients and admitted at special  COVID hospital are moved to a dedicated COVID health centre (CHC) after they show showing signs of recovery, and this will enable the healthcare officials to assign them the intensive care beds needed for recovery, which, in the current scenario are in not in enough supply

The information states that a three-tier care system has been announced by the BMC where the dedicated COVID hospitals, DCHCs and COVID care centres (CCC) are on the top, middle and bottom of the pyramid. Here's how it works:

  • Patients who are critically ill will be admitted at the COVID hospitals.
  • After they recover but still show symptoms, they will be shifted to CHCs.
  • Upon further improvement and becoming asymptomatic, they are moved to CCC2.

The decision to frame the new discharge policy has been undertaken under the guidance of Dr Sanjay Oak has framed. A patient can be moved to either of the CCCs:

  • CCC1 (Lodges, Hotels, etc, where medical care is given, but not round-the-clock)
  • CCC2 (Under the observation of doctors and nurses round the clock at a government centre).

Currently, the officials at the BMC are working hard to improve the healthcare infrastructure for COVID-19 patients as the number of beds along with the required staff and doctors are not sufficient. Talking about the same an official from the BMC said that this movie will help in optimising the use of COVID hospitals and the available facilities thereby prioritize treatment, keeping arrangements ready for the ones in need.
