Against the backdrop of a possible third wave of coronavirus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to re-open the Jumbo Covid Center at Mahalakshmi Racecourse, stated reports.

The centre is to be equipped with a total of nearly 450 beds, for which the municipality is claimed to be spending Rs 44,83,38,000. The covid centre will have 205 ICU beds and 250 to 450 beds for the treatment of critically ill coronavirus patients.

Considering that the city had recently faced the wrath of the second wave, the Maharashtra government had imposed stringent restrictions. It is believed that the second wave was brought under control due to surveys, enhanced testing, contact tracing being undertaken on a war-footing, quarantine measures, strict enforcement of restricted areas, proper treatment practices and effective municipal measures.

On the other hand, health experts have warned of a possible third wave in the coming months, mentioned accounts. Therefore, a nearly 455-bed jumbo centre will be set up in the parking area of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, to ensure timely treatment of those infected by undertaking adequate measures. Facilities like oxygen supply, fire extinguishing systems have also been provided in the Mahalaxmi Jumbo Covid Centre. A consultant will be appointed for all these works, who will be paid Rs 13 lakhs for their services.

A municipal health official, according to the narrative by Navarashtra stated that the Mahalaxmi Racecourse Jumbo Covid Centre will ease the burden on KEM, Nair and Sion hospitals.
