According to reports, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra Government to provide 10,000 vials of Remdesivir, a crucial anti-viral drug to treat patients suffering from the coronavirus.

However, after it was pointed out to the bench that there may be a law and order situation owing to the non-availability of drugs, the Court directed the Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, to identify these hotspots, outside hospitals or supply centres for oxygen and drugs, and provide protection accordingly.

Moreover, it slammed the Centre stating that even though the state alone accounts for 40 per cent of the total number of COVID-19 patients, it does not receive free injections to treat them. It further criticized the state government adding that in many districts, these anti-viral drugs are being distributed arbitrarily. Meanwhile, the court also issued directions regarding the setting up of temporary centres for patients and facilities for those waiting outside hospitals further instructing medical and paramedical personnel to comply with orders requisitioning their services.

In recent developments, last week, the court had asked the state government to consider setting up a unit or plant for the production of oxygen at Nagpur for COVID-19 patients. In addition, Union minister Nitin Gadkari also pitched in the efforts to overcome oxygen shortage and a 16-tonne oxygen tanker reached Nagpur on its first trip from the Bhilai Steel Plant on Monday, last week.
