Amid the increasing cases of the coronavirus or COVID-19, the inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) has projected that the numbers in Mumbai will rise up to estimated 42, 604 by April 30 and will get increased to 6,56,407 by May 15.

The data presented by the team shows trouble for the Maharashtra government and is based on mathematical modelling for Mumbai by the Union Health Ministry, the Hindu reported. The state government has contested the methodology and tools used for the latest projection and gap analysis.

The projections shared by the Union Ministry of Health on April 16 suggest that the health infrastructure of Mumbai during this peak would have a huge shortage of 13,636 ventilators and 4,83,000 isolation beds.

However, as the central team came to Mumbai for a two-day visit, the state government on Tuesday made a detailed presentation while highlighting the “discrepancies” in the mathematical modelling. According to the projections made on April 16, the number for the shortage of isolation beds without oxygen support will reach 30,481 by April 30 in Mumbai while the beds with oxygen support will drop by 5,466.

The report said that as the cases increase to 6,56,407 on May 15 the shortage of isolation beds without oxygen support will be a massive 4,83,285 while the shortage of ICU beds and ventilators will be 27,688 and 13,636, respectively, the Hindu reported.

However, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that there is nothing to worry while stating that the projections made by the central team were based on assumptions that the situation will remain static. Every possible effort is being made to contain the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19, Tope said.

The ICMT arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday for a two-day visit to check the state efforts in implementing the lockdown measure along with inspecting the supply of essentials and safety of healthcare professionals.

The inter-ministerial centre team (IMCT), deputed by the centre to inspect the efforts or preparedness of Maharashtra to tackle the coronavirus outbreak, recommended an increase in the capacity of quarantine facility in Mumbai to 2,000 from the current 1,200.

The centre has designated six inter-ministerial teams - two each for Maharashtra and West Bengal and one each for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The reason to constitute such teams was taken in the view of the increasing cases in cities like Mumbai and Pune as they have become the hotbeds for the coronavirus outbreak.
