COVID-19: 64 policemen in Maharashtra test positive, 32 of them belong to Mumbai

Maharashtra has become the worst-hit state in India crossing 5,000-mark with almost 5,221 COVID-19 positive cases. The death toll in the state has risen up to 251.

Nearly 64 police personnel from Maharashtra were tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19 on Wednesday. The infected policemen include 12 officers and 52 constables. Of the 64 policemen tested positive, almost 34 personnel are from Mumbai. 

As per the data shared by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Maharashtra has become the worst-hit state in India crossing 5,000-mark with almost 5,221 COVID-19 positive cases. The death toll in the state has risen up to 251. 

Of these cases, nearly 3,451 cases have been reported from Mumbai while the numbers in Dharavi has also increased to 180. Dharavi is the slum-dominated area in Mumbai with a huge population. The death toll in Mumbai has also hiked to 151.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 19 employees of an IT company based out of TTC MIDC Industrial Estate in Mhape have been tested positive for COVID-19. The affected have been sent to NMMC Hospital in Vashi. Of the 19 fresh COVID-19 cases, 7 patients belonged to Mumbai while the rest are from Navi Mumbai. 

Earlier, a women police constable posted at ‘Varsha’ - the official residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray - tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday. Moreover, a male police constable deployed at ‘Sagar’ which is the official residence of Devendra Fadnavis has also been tested positive for COVID-19. 

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed that the IMCT has said suggested that the number of beds for quarantine facility should be increased to 2,000 from the current 1,200 beds. The reason being, a recent hike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the city. 

The ICMT visited Dharavi on Wednesday and was accompanied by Rajesh Tope and officials from the state and BMC health department. The team visited quarantine facility at Dharavi transit camp.
