With the instances of cases of coronavirus witnessing a rise across Maharashtra, the Centre has issued a strong warning to the state government asking it to plan for a “worst-case scenario” in the coming months.
According to reports, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has written to the State Chief Secretary warning the administration of inadequate contact tracing efforts while urging that it must focus on stringent and useful containment strategies. Bhushan further cautioned against the start of a “second wave” in the state, adding that measures like weekend lockdowns and night curfews had a “very limited impact on containing or suppressing the transmission”.
Meanwhile, as COVID-19 cases witness a spike, the Latur district administration has imposed a night curfew between 8 PM and 5 AM in the district, Moreover, it has also shut all weekly markets till March 31, with only emergency services exempted. Apart from Latur, several other districts like Amaravati, Yavatmal have been put already under restrictions. Meanwhile, the Centre has observed that Kerala and Maharashtra account for 77 per cent of total active cases of coronavirus in the country, and has asked the respective state governments to ramp up their efforts in place for overall testing.
On the other hand, earlier on January 16, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the state and inaugurated the vaccination centre at BKC. While initially this drive was being conducted on five days every week- Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, now it has been extended to all days 24x7.
