Maharashtra, over the last few weeks, has seen an increase in coronavirus cases with co-morbidities and COVID-19 related death. Observing the same, the administration decided to take strict measures to reduce the concerns both for the people and the government. The civic body recently decided to provide beds to a growing number of patients and has understood that if the cases continue to rise, this will be a major challenge going ahead.

Furthermore, patients have also started complaining about the unavailability of beds at many hospitals and keeping the same in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced official telephone numbers or helpline numbers for the benefit of the patients, which can be used to report COVID-19 cases and if they need a bed.

This move is said to be helpful as it will reduce the cases where patients are overcharged for the beds and officials can assign them to the ones who need it at the time of the crisis.

The announcement was made by the civic body on its official Twitter handle, and the message includes telephone numbers of the 24 wards in Mumbai. Through these numbers, the concerned patients or relatives can call the control room and get all the information related to the beds and COVID-19 assistance.

Over the last few weeks, the number of patients in Mumbai has been on the rise, and with this, the planning for beds and other requirements is being done directly by the municipality. BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has clarified the same and as per the revised guidelines, any beds reserved by the name of a VIP will not be allowed and will also be avoided when there is no actual need.

The civic body also announced its decision to re-occupy 80 per cent of the beds in a private hospital in Mumbai, whereby a total of 4,800 beds will now be available for coronavirus patients from private hospitals in Mumbai.

At present, the municipality has over 13,000  beds in private and municipal hospitals and officials are trying to increase it further. Witnessing an increasing number of coronavirus patients in Mumbai, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has appealed to Mumbaikars to strictly follow the rules imposed by the state government and mentioned that Mumbaikars should recognize their responsibility at such times. Strict care should be taken to wear masks when in public, to avoid crowding and to not leave the house when not needed.

Even though the municipal corporation has started taking strict action against those who do not wear masks, people need to understand their responsibility and take care of themselves," he added.
