The vaccine for the coronavirus developed by Zydus Cadila Healthcare, ZyCoV-D, is being tested at St George's Hospital in Mumbai.

According to sources, the hospital had earlier selected 2,737 healthy people for this test. All of these people have been vaccinated. Five months after the vaccination, only 22 people were found to be infected with COVID-19.

This vaccine developed by Zydus Cadila happens to be a needle-free vaccine for the coronavirus. This is an intradermal vaccine that does not require getting injected into the muscles. Moreover, one needs to take three doses of this vaccine. After taking the first dose, the second dose should be taken on day 28 and the third on day 56.

ZyCoV-D, developed at the company's Vaccine Technology Centre in Ahmedabad, had earlier received permission from the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) - Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to initiate phase I/II human clinical trials in India, Cadila Healthcare said in a regulatory filing.

According to reports, in animal studies, the vaccine was found to elicit a strong immune response in multiple animal species like mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits. In addition, the antibodies produced by the vaccine were able to completely neutralise the wild type virus in virus neutralisation assay indicating the protective potential of the vaccine candidate.
