A man from Mumbai’s Vikhroli returned home on Monday, July 5, after fighting 85 days long battle against COVID-19. The 54-year-old patient, Bharat Panchal, was being treated at LH Hiranandani Hospital.

As he exited the hospital after nearly three months, his family heaved a sigh of relief as they had frequently given up hope during his prolonged hospital stay.

Panchal, who owns and manages a chemist shop in Vikhroli, started developing a fever, almost two weeks after he received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Within four days, he developed severe lung complications and within a week he had to be put on mechanical ventilation support.

The CT value, which determines the severity of the coronavirus infection, reached 21 from 25.

Bharat stayed on a ventilator for more than 70 days, during which time he battled acute kidney injury, liver dysfunction, sepsis, multi-organ failure, lung rupture and even fought off a mucormycosis scare.

According to sources, this was the longest hospitalization they have recorded in 15 months. The doctors at Hiranandani Hospital said Panchal developed every complication that a COVID-19 patient could.

From plasma, Remdesivir and tocilizumab to a range of antibacterial and antifungal medicines, almost everything in the armoury was used, doctors said.

Bharat’s roller-coaster recovery saw one last critical moment when his lungs started bleeding about a fortnight ago. The family gave up hope. But fortunately, he managed to survive the last threat as well.

The family has spent more than INR 40 lakh. Once the insurance was exhausted, they were charged according to the government’s capped rates, Panchal said.

Besides, the city’s public hospitals, too, have encountered cases where patients have taken unusually long to recover from the complications of the virus.
