India’s coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination coverage, as of July 20, 2022, exceeded 200.61 crore as per provisional reports. 

Officials informed that this has been achieved through over 2.64 crore sessions. Moreover, COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on March 16, 2022, and so far, over 3.81 crore adolescents have been administered with the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for age group 18-59 years also started from April 10, 2022.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has lauded the collective efforts of scientists, doctors and nurses in powering India’s vaccination drive. 

Bill Gates also took to Twitter to congratulate the nation, and said, "Congratulations @narendramodi for yet another milestone of administering #200crorevaccinations. We are grateful for our continued partnership with Indian vaccine manufacturers and the Indian government for mitigating the impact of COVID19."

 

PM Modi tweeted in response to  Bill Gates and said, "India's vaccination drive is big on speed and scale. It has been powered by collective efforts of many, including scientists, doctors and nurses. At the same time, the people of India have shown remarkable faith in science and taken their doses in a timely manner.”

 

As of July 20, India’s active caseload currently stands at over 1.45 lakh where active cases now constitute to 0.33 per cent of the country's total positive casesConsequently, the recovery rate in India, as of July 20, stands at 98.47 per cent whereby over 18,500 patients  recovered in the last 24 hours taking the tally to now over 4.31 crore.

On Wednesday, officials from the health department reported that over 20,500 new cases were reported in India. Over 4.9 lakh COVID-19 tests have been conducted in a day, taking the overall count to more than 87.06 crore tests.

Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan, on July 20, 2022, chaired a high-level meeting today to review the COVID-19 situation in 9 states of India - Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. As per reports, these states have been reporting a surge in new daily cases or a rise in positivity. 

Officials urged states to improve the testing in areas with high positivity, increase surveillance as per the revised surveillance strategy and speed up COVID vaccination. The public health measures for surveillance, containment and management of COVID19 were also reviewed by the officials. The meeting was also attended by Dr Vinod Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog was also present.

Expressing concern regarding the surge in cases in these states in the past one month, Dr V. K. Paul reiterated, “We need to be mindful that COVID has not gone. Looking at the global scenario, we need to be at high alert. There is poor surveillance, poor testing and below average vaccination in many states undergoing the present surge”, he pointed out.
