On Monday, Maharashtra Minister Eknath Shinde directed Thane district authorities to set up a special 1,000-bed hospital in the next three weeks. The state minister has asked the authorities to set up a hospital similar to the facility coming up in BKC in Mumbai amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision from the state's Urban Development minister and MLA from Thane, Shinde chaired a review meeting. After which, it was decided that the Thane Municipal Corporation's 'Global Impact Hub' will be converted into a temporary 1,000-bed hospital to treat COVID-19 patients.

The meeting was attended by Mayor Naresh Mhaske, TMC commissioner Vijay Singhal, senior civic health officials and representatives of Jupiter Hospital and Indian Medical Association. The representatives from the two institutes will provide technical assistance to set up the facility. As per the officials, the temporary facility will consist of 500 beds with oxygen and 500 without oxygen. The hospital will also have ICU, path lab, X-ray centre, fever clinic etc.

The Global Impact Hub is a proposed co-working and start-up ecosystem venture of the civic body spread over several thousand square feet.

As of May 4, Monday, Thane district had recorded 1,183 Covid-19 cases. Alongside, the number of cases in Thane and Navi Mumbai municipal corporation limits have crossed 300 each while in Kalyan-Dombivli area, it is currently hovering around 200-mark.

Other than that, since 254 cases have been recorded in the Vashi region, there has been a big concern regarding the operations of the APMC market that falls in this area. Hence to address the concern, a swab test was conducted in the area and over 4,000 people were tested.
