Coronavirus Pandemic: 60 Indian students stranded in Singapore arrive in Mumbai

Amid the coronavirus scare, close to 60 students landed in Mumbai on Thursday night. The students were stranded at the Singapore International Airport.

Out of these 60, 40 students were from Maharashtra and arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on March 19 in a Singapore Airlines flight. 

"Most of the students are pursuing a medical course in the Philippines. They went to Singapore but had to spend one-and-a half-day there as no flight was available for them to return to India,"  a relative of a student told India Today.

After landing, the students had to go through immigration checks. Once the formalities were complete all 60 of them had been screened at the airport. None of them so far has any symptoms of COVID-19.

With 10 positive cases of the novel coronavirus being detected in Mumbai, the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are taking all the necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus.

Amid the partial lockdown in the city, the municipal corporation is preparing quarantine facilities and isolation wards ahead of the arrival of 26,000 people from Gulf countries.

BMC has already tied up with a couple of hotels near the Mumbai airport, where people can pay and stay during the isolation period. There are talks to have more of such pay-and-use facilities. 

As per an official, the civic body has decided to open isolation wards in at least 10 city hospitals. That being said, another 15,000 people are expected from the US by the end of March. Both the Gulf and the US have been affected by the outbreak.

With COVID-19 being declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), flight operations have been disrupted all over the world. The coronavirus pandemic which has hit more than 150 countries after it originated in Wuhan province of China.
