As the number of infected cases of coronavirus or COVID-19 climbs up to 52, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday appointed two senior bureaucrats to set up a control room in Mantralaya to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

The Chief Minister has assigned the task of setting up the control room to Additional Chief Secretary Rajeev Jalota and Principal Secretary Bhushan Gagrani. The special control room will keep an eye on the situation across Maharashtra amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Former GST Commissioner Jalota and Bureaucrat Gagrani, both have been given independent responsibilities. “Gagrani will coordinate the work in Mantralaya and Mumbai while Jalota has been entrusted with the task of the rest of the state,” Times of India quoted a senior official.

The central government along with the state government have issued strict guidelines in the view of increasing cases of the coronavirus or COVID-19. Therefore, the coordination on different levels is necessary.

The official further informed that effective coordination is needed in the times of emergency and this is why senior officials like Jalota and Gagrani have been deployed to ensure that there is no laxity.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray appointed former additional commissioner of the Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Vijay Singhal as the new commissioner of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). Singhal replaced Sanjeev Jaiswal as the TMC Commissioner after the latter proceeded on spiritual leave after his tenure got over.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for ‘Janta curfew’ on March 22 from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. While addressing the nation, Modi emphasised on the need to practice social distancing and “isolating oneself from the world”.

Modi also appealed the public not to don’t indulge in panic buying while stating that there is no scarcity of essential commodities.
