Coronavirus Pandemic: BMC notifies six states after three foreigners test positive

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday alerted six states — Delhi, Haryana, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat — after three men from the Philippines tested positive for Covid-19. The patients have been kept under observation in an isolated at Kasturba Hospital. The condition of one is critical.

According to the officials, the three men — a 59-year-old, a 42-year-old and a 49-year-old — had arrived with a group in Mumbai on March 3. After which, the group took a train to Delhi and returned again by train last week.

When the 59-year-old man began exhibiting symptoms of the coronavirus, his samples were sent for testing and on March 13, it returned positive. The man is in Kasturba Hospital and his condition is said to be critical.

Following which, the municipal authorities then traced people he came in contact with. By then, the two Filipino men also tested positive and were isolated at Kasturba. The condition of these two, however, was reported to be stable.

As the train they took passed through other states as well, the BMC has informed these states and the Central Railways.

“We have informed the respective authorities of these states mentioning that a coronavirus positive person travelled through their jurisdiction on the particular days. Now they will take necessary action,” a top BMC official from the health department told Hindustan Times.

Meanwhile, close to 60 students landed in Mumbai on Thursday night. The students were stranded at the Singapore International Airport. Out of these 60, 40 students were from Maharashtra and arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on March 19 in a Singapore Airlines flight. 

With COVID-19 being declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), flight operations have been disrupted all over the world. The coronavirus pandemic which has hit more than 150 countries after it originated in Wuhan province of China.
